DING 2013: “Born at Moreton Vicarage in Staffordshire, she moved to Edgmond, Shropshire at the age of four. She was the first woman ever to become President of the Folklore Society. She contributed more than seventy papers to it, many of them seminal in modern Folklore studies. Apart from her Handbook of Folklore (1914), she edited, adding materials of her own, Georgina Jackson’s posthumous work on the folklore of the county. Unfortunately she “modified the dialect very considerably...because [she] doubted [her] ability to reproduce , with sufficient accuracy more than an occasional word or phrase in any dialect save the softened from ‘Staffordshire’, which [was] spoken around [her] old home” (Burne 1883: ix). Nevertheless Shropshire Folk-lore contains specimens from North-East, West and South Shropshire dialect.”
