DING 2014: “Philologist born in Ottley, Yks., where he lived until 1811 when he started teaching at Southwell, Not. In 1813, once ordained, he was a curate at Hutton Rudby, Yks. until 1815 when he moved to Blackburn, Lan. There he remained, working as a curate and as a schoolmaster, until 1826. He then became the incumbent at Tockholes, near Blackburn. In 1829 he was appointed priest-vicar of Litchfield Cathedral in Staffordshire and he lived there until 1836 when he was given the living of Chebsey, Stf. In 1838 he became assistant keeper of printed books at the British Museum. His son, also Richard, edited his essays in 1859.”
