DING 2021: “Son of a parish clerk, this antiquarian was born in Washington, Dur. Soon afterwards he moved to Gatehead. He received his education at the Newcastle Grammar School, and then at Oxford, at Lincoln College. He was first curate of Bolam, Nb., and then of a parish in Newcastle. He later became perpetual curate of Cramlington, Nb. By 1784 he was living in London. From that date until his death he was Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries of London. He was also secretary and librarian of the duke of Northumberland. He was a keen bibliophile.”
