DING 2021: "Prolific writer on English architecture, topography, and history. Born at Kingston St. Michael, Wilt., where his father was a farmer, maltster, baker and shop-keeper. He first attended a dame´s school, was then tutored by a Baptist minister in Grittleton and afterwards was a pupil at schools in Church Eaton and Chippenham. He began his working life as a tavern-keeper apprentice and clerk in an attorney's office in London. He soon could devote himself to writing and travelling. He wrote descriptive books on Wiltshire, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, etc. He later focused on the production of books describing architectural monuments in which he included engravings and prints. The acquisition of his library when he died was the seed that prompted the creation of  The Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society."
