DING 2021: "Born in Rodbourne Cheney, nr. Swindon, Wilt. His father was Irish and his mother a native of Cliffe Pypard, Wilt. He and his glossary co-author, Rev. Edward Hungerford Goddard, were cousins. In the 1861 census he appears as living in Stogurse, Som., in 1871, in Road, Som., in 1891, in St. Edmund, Wilt., in 1901, in Stratford Subcastle, Wilt., and at the time of his death in Salisbury, Wilt.

He studied at the Marlborough Grammar School,and then at the Marlborough College. He worked for the Wilts and Dorset Banking Company and for the Bank of Salisbury until his early retirement.  He was a poet and also a translator of French and German poetry. In his translation of "Das Todtenhemdchen" by Bauernfeld, he uses dialect (See Gallery. See also the Preface to Darnell 1910).

He contributed to the compilation of EDD. His 1893 glossary, also contains an appendix with samples of Wiltshire dialect literature."
