DING 2021: "Born in Devonport, the son of a Devonport builder. In 1851 he was apprenticed at The Devonport and Plymouth Telegraph where he became a journalist. For a year in 1866 he was the editor of The Northern Daily Express in Newcastle. He returned to Plymouth and worked again, for 10 years, at The Western Morning News (with which the The Devonport and Plymouth Telegraph had merged). In 1876 he joined a publishing and printing business in Plymouth.

His main interest was the history and geology of Devonshire and Cornwall. He published extensively on this topic in local society proceedings and in The Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society. He wrote several books on the history of Plymouth and Davenport, as well as an anthology of west country poets.”
