DING 2013: “Born in Westhoughton, Lan., he first went to school in Clitheroe and later studied in Oxford. For a year, in 1879, he was curate at Sandhurst and spent the next six years at Reading. In 1886 he became rector of Barkham where he remained until his death. He was a historian and prolific writer. He was an active member of the Berkshire Archaeological Society where he served as Secretary for almost 40 years and then as President. One of the papers in Bygone Berkshire deals with Berkshire dialect. It was written by Rev. M. J. Bacon, once curate at Newton.”
