DING 2015: “Geologist born in Dent, Yks, where he lived until he was 15 years old. He was then educated at Sedberh School, Cum., and later attended Trinity College, Cambridge. He eventually became Woodwardian Professor of Geology at Cambridge. In A Memorial by the Trustees of Cowgil Chapel (1868) he included two Appendixes, dictated from his armchair when he was already 80 years old, on Northern English and on the dialect of his birthplace."
