DING 2012: "Born in Rochdale, he was a hat manufacturer, dialect poet and short-story dialect writer. He was the first editor of The Rochdale Observer in 1856. That year he also began editing a weekly comic journal called The Lancashire Fly-by-Neet. He also wrote poetry in standard English, The Bridal of Naworth (1837), published anonymously, and Poems (1839).
