DING 2015: "School master born at Emont Bridge, nr. Penrith.  He was proficient in Classical languages. He also studied medicine. He wrote the preface and contributed widely to A Survey of the Lakes of Cumberland, Westmoreland, and Lancashire (1787) by James Clarke. His Copy of a Letter, written by a Young Shepherd to his Friend in Borrowdale underwent many editions and was included in Jollie's Sketch of Cumberland Manners (1811),  and also by John Russell Smith in his Westmoreland and Cumberland Dialects: Dialogues, Poems, Songs and Ballads (1839)"
