DING 2014: “Antiquarian and topographer born at Ovington. He worked as a master at Durham School between 1812 and 1827. He was also librarian to the Dean and Chapter of Durham and Rector of Meldon, Nb. He collaborated with Robert Surtees (1779-1834) in the production of his History of Durham, finishing the 4th volume, which appeared after Surtees' death. Raine also wrote a History of North Durham, in 2 volumes. He founded the Surtees Society, to honour his friend, in 1834,  and became its first secretary. He edited 17 volumes for it.”
