DING 2015: “Born at Cardross, Dumbartonshire, where his father was the minister. He studied at the University of Glasgov. In 1778 he became tutor to the sons of Joseph Foster Barham of Bedford where he remained for three years. In 1781 he was appointed curate of Claybrook, Lei. In 1789 he was presented to the rectory of Frolesworth which he soon renounced. Between 1790 and 1794 he travelled to Belgium and the Netherlands and to Germany, as tutor of Sir Walter Farquhar's son. There he also tutored Caroline of Brunswick who would later become Queen Caroline. In 1796 he was offered the living of Rothley, Lei. where he remained until his death. He is buried at St. Mary and St. John Church, Rothley".
