DING 2015: “Born at Milton Regis, Knt., he moved to Dorking, Sur. in 1849 and spent the rest of his life there. He worked as an interior designer but he is best remembered for his wild life paintings. He contributed many articles and essays to contemporary periodicals on the nature of the area under the pseudonym "A Son of the Marshes". These were later published in book form, edited by Jean Allan Owen (1841-1922). She made use also of his ms notes. In Annals of a Fishing Village (1891) he represented his native Kentish dialect. In the rest of his publications the Surrey dialect was suggested.”
