DING 2012: "“Born at Ashford, Knt, he worked as a gardener in Faversham until 1830. Then he travelled extensively in Essex, Sussex, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, and, later, to Calcutta, where he remained until 1863. He was a tea-trader, a botanist, and a poet. Dick and Sal was first published before 1821 and underwent over 17 editions and reprints before 1910. It meant the beginning of the tradition of short stories or poems in dialect describing a couple's visit to a place different from their own.”
